A Night In New York
Sitting in a bar in Grenage Village N. Y., I ordered a Jack & Coke and watched The Who walk out on stage at a packed Madison Square Garden for their spot in the concert for New York 9/11. They looked as good as ever as Pete flailed his arms and thrashed out the chords of Baba O'Riley, with the energy and aggression of a twenty year old. John stands as quiet and majestic as ever as he's the real driving force of The Who, when Keith would over-run in some drum solo which ascended from pure madness, The OX would be there with a lead bass solo which wouldn't have been better if god had written it himself. And Rog - its amazing how he's got any voice left due to nearly forty years of "MAXIMUM R & B" but he's still going strong, vocal chords aren't what they use to be, but who am I to judge when this man has sung me to sleep almost every night for the past six years. The concert was great but little did I know what was yet to come.
An hour or so later admiring the nightlife of the city that never sleeps, I happened to pass B B Kings blues club, where The John Entwhistle Band were playing that night. I just had to get in so I spoke to the doorman and he said, " I think it's sold out". So I waited in the queue with no ticket, was I going to get in? The queue started to go down as the people in front had tickets and there was me standing in the cold, freezing my Balls off! Then the door man sees me and with a gleeting smile and a twinkle in his eye I was in.
The Ox came on over an hour late - due to the first gig in M.S.G. They were great as they gave me the night of my life, Who classics as far as the ear could hear at sixty thousand decibels. I made some conversation in the interval with an American Who fan who told me, "The last time he was here I met him after the gig". When the last few litres of dribble finally cleared my mouth, Heaven & Hell made my stomach turn sick as the thunderous Bass intro dragged me back into reality. I wondered would I get to meet this man of whom I have posters on my wall, that I have loved for years.
Would I get to shake the hand of the man that has influenced me in every thing I know as a bass player and everything I do as a MOD? The answer is YES - this is all I have to say, some of u will understand.......
